Hand Carved Plexiglass with Shadows

the images of the subway platforms come from the hundreds of photographs taken by the artist. The images carved into the plexiglass aren’t visible in the plexiglass itself, they only become as shadows cast upon the wall behind the artwork from the light cast through them.

As it takes approximately 20 minutes to carve a 2 square inch section it took a full year to carve the 20 foot long piece.

Last Solo Show Prior to Finding My Son

In 1990 my son was kidnapped and disappeard, throwing my entire life out of balanc. In 2000 I found him and had the FBI bring him home. Unfortunately I was up against a "church" with seemingly inexhaustible funds and the next 18 months had me battling them in court. this exhausted me financially and emotionally, especially when my son was brain washed into rejoinging them after 18 months of being home with me.

“In the far distance a helicopter skimmed down between the roofs, hovered for an instant like a bluebottle, and darted away again with a curving flight. It was the police patrol, snooping into people's windows. The patrols did not matter, however. Only the Thought Police mattered.”

George Orwell published “1984” in June 1949 as his horrified vision of the totalitarian state. Propaganda becomes the facile fabrication of news, organized by the state to manipulate the populace into passivity and fear. The never-ending war controls the narrative necessary for keeping the workers satisfied with their never-ending drudgery and starvation lifestyles. The Cult of Personality enforced by the Secret Police and their constant mass surveillance are no longer our most feared distant future, with facial recognition software operating through every camera on every corner we are now constantly watched and monitored. In Britain, people are happily living in one of the most ‘watched’ societies on Earth, with an estimated five million security cameras watching people. In China, cameras armed with facial recognition are used by police to pick out criminals even in large crowds. Our own online shopping and research are constantly monitored to send us advertisements.

A Mythical American Adventure

A Galactic Commute/ A Subterranean Excursion

Some people ride the subway. Others endure it. Norton sees the white tiled walls more like Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn on the raft winding along the Mississippi River, looking up at the night sky, reflecting on the stars and their origins.

Stretching thirty feet long, this 11 foot tall painting isn’t just a depiction of being in the subway — this is a reimagining of the daily journey. A personal mythos map for the interior mind. When riding this train the only stop is at your own Planetarium, somewhere outside your daily self.

What makes this journey even wilder is this is the first painting the artist has made in twenty years.

For two decades, he was making work — yes — but not painting. Not in this wide, immersive, unfiltered way. Before this came a series of plexiglass shadow pieces — carved, not brushed. Chiseled light. Subway riders as silhouettes caught mid-transit, mid-thought, mid-exhale.

So this painting becomes a return. But not a return to the past and Not a Singularity. It’s a personal Big Bang, the outward expansion of a gifted mind. A re-entry into painting that feels less like picking up a brush and more like setting off flares in a dark tunnel, saying: I’m still here. And look what I saw down there.

This isn’t just a painting of the subway. It’s what happens when you drag the life of an entire galaxy underground and dare it to commute with you.

Cops in Full Battle Gear

Since 2019 I have been obsessed with the testosterone overdrive of the police forces around the globe. The need for the militarization of these civilian forces to brutalize and subjugate the less than privileged populations. It’s the manhood myth of the strength of the right of force.

I’ve made multiple large scale drawings, mostly from one image of a cop in full battle gear carrying his truncheon, from a newsreel out of Hong Kong. I’ve drawn them in charcoal, with pastels, oil sticks, with tar paper and world maps.

Several if these drawings have demanded specialized frames be built, which I have done myself.

William Norton is an Artist /Curator/now Gallerist at -the gallery LTD- living and working in Bushwick, Brooklyn has exhibited in the NYC area, Europe and Japan where he is sending 7 artists to participate alongside him in the Kameyama Triennial in October 2021.

Through his art he has been investigating what it means to become a man, especially since confronted with his inability to protect his 4 year old son, who was kidnapped in 1990.

His work studies the dark forces behind what is considered to be “manhood’s rite of passage”. This same need to become a warrior was also instilled within him by his military upbringing. Testosterone’s travesty and horror is witnessed daily throughout the world by our autocratic governments and police forces.

Since March 2019 and the beginning of the protests for Democracy in Hong Kong the violence of the governmental police response has been overwhelmingly brutal. Students have been tortured, murdered, raped and disappeared without any repercussions for the perpetrators.

The Umbrella and Yellow Raincoat have become powerful symbols for the movement. The umbrellas have been effective for deflecting the tear gas canisters and the Yellow Raincoat was worn by a young protestor thrown to his death from the upper levels of a parking garage.

Add all of this to our current regime putting children in cages at the border, separating them permanently from their families or leaving them to die of disease and neglect.

Our American “manhood coming of age rituals” involve too many poseurs with guns, power and no morals, education or ethics.

This piece “Movable Cops” was created in response to the horrific treatment of the mostly young protesters for democracy in Hong Kong by the CCP police, resulting in the disappearance, rapes, murders and imprisonments of thousands. Unfortunately this same police brutality is baked into our own White Supremacist police forces here. Etched into the plexiglass sheets are images of police in full battle gear which the viewers can move by the sliding track. The umbrella and yellow raincoat are just two of the many symbols of the protesters.

I grew up in Japan from 1960-1963 and while there I read the book “Hiroshima”. It’s graphic images seared themselves into my brain, like the black shadows cast by the bomb’s dead upon the ground. This nuclear explosion feels to me like the nuclear creation of Godzilla.

Kameyama Triennial, Mie Province, Japan 2017,

For the Kameyama Triennial in 2017 I was fortunate to be able to exhibit in an historical Samurai Dwelling originally built during the Edo Period in the 1700s.

As the building has historical significance we were not allowed to nail into the walls or the structure in any way the curator, Cake Hara, had individual pedestals built for each one. He then found a calligraphist to write the title of each one in Kanji.

Each piece had an image carved into it that was inspired by my childhood growing up in Japan.

I’ve been very fortunate that I’ve been invited back for each iteration

In the Kameyama Triennial my work was displayed in an ancient, historic Samurai dwelling from the Edo period. We could not attach directly to the walls so the curator, Cake Hara, manufactured these pedestals for me

traveling everyday underground, my vision consistently fixed upon my surroundings and the lack of humanity in the moving parts.

everybody alive to their technology but not each other.

the blank canvas of the decaying walls more intoxicating and alive than the blank faces of the moving parts surrounding me.

the scale on this piece is purposeful.at 20 feet long and 7 feet tall it encompasses the viewer, making the viewer's shadow an active part of the composition. the scale of the hollow figures are drawn large enough to be identified with.

this piece took one year to create. it averaged out to 20 minutes per every 2 square inches. each carved mark being permanent and indelible required me to be alive and alert to how each mark spoke with its neighbors.

I spent 1 entire year carving these images into the 7’ x 5’ x 1/2” plexiglass, which I also built a hanging and interior framing system for. This piece can be mounted on the wall so it’s image becomes visible as the light passes through, the shadows of the carved lines are then cast onto the wall behind.

It can also just lean at an angle against the wall.

The images carved into the plexiglass are chosen from the hundreds of photographs I shot on the NYC subway platforms.

There is a staircase visible because entering the subway is reminiscent of entering the 7 circles of hell.

We are all just cogs in the machine

1999-2018.

After my 4 year old son was kidnapped and disappeared in 1990 I spent many years investigating the reasons why. I studied world religions and philosophies trying to get a handle on my loss.

This also led me to investigate my own upbringing and history, having been raised in the military it was expected that I too would become a warrior. Men are brought up with indoctrinations that are supposed to prepare us to navigate our world and society. Many indigenous peoples have intricate rites of passage to manhood that do prepare their young men to be hunters, warriors that can function well in their societies.

I located venues, pitched and sold the concept, then ran with it. Building one success upon another.
